October 6, 1946 World Series News – Game 1

46countrySlaughter.jpg World Series, Game 1, at St. Louis and the Cardinals take a 1-0 lead with a 4-1 win. The Cardinals starting pitcher Pollet was nearly unhittable today, while the Red Sox Tex Hughson looked rusty from the long rain delayed layoff that delayed the start of this series by four days. The hitting star for the Cardinals was Enos Slaughter with his two-run scoring double(s).  Slaughter finished the day 2 for 2, 3 RBI. Boston’s Rudy York parked one into the LF stands for the lone HR.

October 7, 1946 World Series News – Game 2

Pinky_Higgins_1934_Goudey.jpg World Series, Game 2, at St. Louis and this game did not go as expected. It was thought that Brecheen would shut down the Boston bats, not so. Of the seventeen (17) Red Sox hits, 16 were singles, as only catcher Hal Wagner’s triple turned out to be the lone extra base hit. Though everyone hit the ball today for the Bosox, veteran Pinky Higgins turned into a big time clutch hitter and earns “game ball” honors. Harris did a great job on the mound today as well, pitching a CG 6-hitter, 7 K’s, 0 walks. As the Red Sox win 7-2 and head to Boston with the series tied 1-1.

October 9, 1946 World Series News – Game 3

Dave_Ferriss_1947_tip_top_bread.JPG World Series, Game 3, at Boston and the Red Sox didn’t disappoint as they jumped all over Murry Dickson in the 6th inning, though errors by the usually sure-handed SS Marty Marion and Dickson himself ruined the day for the Cardinals. Ferriss, meanwhile, was on his game and tossed a very nice 4-hit shutout, despite the cold, blustery day in Boston. The Red Sox leads this series 2-1.

October 10, 1946 World Series News – Game 4

Rudy_York_1947_tip_top_bread.JPG World Series, Game 4, at Boston and the Red Sox bats came alive off surprise Cardinals starter Red Munger, as the Bosox put three (3) on the board in the 1st inning and that’s more than Tex Hughson would need to finish out the game in a reversal of his performance in game one. For the Red Sox, everyone got into the act except for Pesky with Rudy York coming away with “game ball” honors for his 4 for 5, RBI game. Ted Williams added a “solo big fly” to add to the Cardinals woes today. The Red Sox have now opened a wide 3-1 lead in the series and will attempt to put things to an end here in Boston in game 5.

October 11, 1946 World Series News – Game 5

46countrySlaughter.jpg World Series, Game 5, at Boston and though Pollet gets the win for a CG performance, he certainly wasn’t that sharp today. Dobson actually pitched slightly better than his counterpart in this ball game, but gets the loss. The big blow came in the Cardinals 8th inning when Harry Walker drilled a line drive 3-run HR over the RF fence that provided the big insurance runs, as the Red Sox did score one in the 9th and was threatening to do more damage when Pollet got PH Rip Russell to ground to SS to end the game. Despite that 3-run blast by Walker, Slaughter receives the “game ball” honors today as he ROBBED Dom DiMaggio of a 2-run HR in the game as well, and went (2 for 3, 2 RBI, HR) with the bat. So I’ll meet you guys in St. Louis for Game 6 as the series is now 3-2 in favor of the Red Sox.

October 13, 1946 World Series News – Game 6

Stan_Musial_1947_Bond_Bread.JPG World Series, Game 6, at St. Louis and The Cat Brecheen was definitely more effective in this game than he had been in game 2. Boston gets four of their five hits from the seventh inning on, and despite throwing 131 pitches, Brecheen completes what he started and comes away with a win. It was Marion’s routine SF in the 3rd inning that proved to be the game winner. Brecheen remained in control the entire game, but in the Boston 7th trailing 3-0, York doubled, and one out later, Higgins walked, Partee then hit a DP ball to 3b where Kurowski threw in the dirt for an error to load the bases. PH Rip Russell then doubled to LCF that plated two, but the tying run was cut down at the plate (762), and Culberson F8 to end the inning. Brecheen ran into more difficulty in the Boston 8th, with two outs, as Ted Williams singled to RF, and York reached first on Schoendienst’s error at 2b. Bobby Doerr then came up and hit a slow roller between 1st and 2nd and Musial made a spectacular play by gloving the ball and quickly releasing it to Brecheen who just beat the speedy Doerr to the bag for the third out. The Red Sox were now out of steam and they went quietly in the 9th 1-2-3 against Brecheen. This series is now tied 3-3 and the pitching machups for tomorrow’s game 7 will be Dickson for St. Louis vs. Ferriss for the Red Sox. “Game ball” honors to Stan-The-Man, who made two great plays in the field, not bad for a DMB-rated (Fr/116).

Red Sox     000   000   200   2 5 0

Cardinals  012   000   00x   3 4 2

Enos_Slaughter_1947_tip_top_bread.JPG World Series, Game 7, at St. Louis and this 1946 replay is a wrap. This game 7 had quite a bit of drama, which is typical of a game where one team starts to pull away and the other is playing catch up to save its life. This game had that feel to it. This has turned into a memorable World Series contest as the Cardinals comeback to win the final three games to capture the title. There was no Enos Slaughter mad dash from 1st to home, but Slaughter did go 3 for 3, RBI and he hit his 2nd HR of the series to earn the 1946 World Series MVP award. The two 1946 league MVP’s were both Ted Williams and Stan Musial respectively. Neither had a great WS, though Williams (.333) wasn’t too far below his actual seasonal numbers. Musial on the other hand only hit (.148). Certainly not a defining moment for either player really, but it’s the last WS for each of them. But for now, the St. Louis Cardinals are the World Series champions for 1946.

Bill_Dickey_1941_playball.jpg Bill Dickey, manager of the New York Yankees resigns with his team only 4 games back of the surging Red Sox. However, the Yankees, under coach Johnny Neun, would win their next nine (9) straight games and 11 of their final 14 games of the year to take this pennant race to the final day of the season before succumbing. The Red Sox during this period certainly didn’t play badly, but only won 7 of their final 12 games.

47 Jackie_Robinson.jpg A Jackie Robinson note in The Sporting News reports that, injuries had depleted the Royals 3b corps. Jackie was shifted to play 3b today “a station he is said to be ticketed to play for Brooklyn next season.” Robinson will play more there than any position except for 2B in the big leagues, though in 1947, his rookie season, Robinson will work only at 1B.

Grady_Hatton_1949_bowman.jpg  Third baseman Grady Hatton of the Reds, candidate for ROY, suffers a season-ending accident under the stands before the start of today’s game with the Phillies in Crosley Field. Hatton is running on the concrete walkway in sneakers, carting his spikes. He swerves to avoid a chil in the crowd and runs into the road secretary. Hatton slips, lands hard on the concrete and fractures his right kneecap, chipped the bone, and ended his season. Grady Hatton (.272, 18, 78) was hitting very well in the replay.

Bob_Feller_1947_Bond_Bread.JPG This is the night that Cleveland Indians pitcher Bob Feller’s fastball is clocked at 98.6 miles per hour, fastest speed yet recorded, by an Army machine called the Lumiline, or Sky Screen, Chronograph. It’s supposed to be accurate to one ten-thousandth of a second. In the replay, Bob Feller (17-11) is in the midst of 9 game winning streak which will extend to the end of August.

August 6, 1946 News

Mickey_Owen_1940_playball.JPG Mickey Owen is back in the States, saying again that he wants to rejoin the Dodgers. “I figure I’ve given all I can to the Mexican League” he’s quoted as telling the New York Times. But, unlike him, others who jumped to the Outlaw League aren’t so eager to come north. Max Lanier says that he has been treated very well and stays in the Mexican League. Owen’s desire to play big league ball again is not universally supported by other players in the majors. Marty Marion is quoted as saying “Owen jumped his team to go down there for that big money, now let him stay there”. The Phillies report “unanimous” agreement against Owen. Despite Owen’s claim that the Mexican League broke their financial obligations to him, Happy Chandler’s assistant Herold Ruel, cites a convenient clause in baseball law, which declares Owen can’t be reinstated this year, no matter what.

August 4, 1946 News

Before what’s described as “the largest crowd” in baseball history, 74,529, the Indians lose to the Yankees 2-0. It’s the first game of a DH, but rain washes out the second game. Also washed out is Bob Feller, who has to leave with a pulled back muscle. In my replay, there are only 21,975 in attendance as they see Feller pitch a CG 4-2 victory that evened his record at 11-11 in the replay. Yankee president MacPhail will soon challenge the accuracy of “largest crowd”, citing a Boston/New York DH at Yankee Stadium in 1938, which he says was attended by 81,481. Actually, it was 81,841, but either way, MacPhail is right. For all his brag and bluster, he usually is.

July 31, 1946 News

Eddie_Yost_1949_bowman Returning from the Navy today is young Washington infielder Eddie Yost, after two years away. Yost, not yet 20, was signed in 1944 before joining the war effort oversea’s. This season, he’ll only get into eight, beginning with a PH appearance of an August 8 DH. Yost has 16 more years ahead of him in the big leagues, most of them at 3B. Between 1949 and 1955, he’ll play 838 consecutive games (which still ranks among the top ten such streaks, more than six decades later).

Ken_Keltner_1947_Bond_BreadDue to his father-in-law passing away in Milwaukee, Ken Keltner will be away from the Indians until August 6th. Keltner lost plenty in the war, in his case only a year of Navy service, but in 1944 he batted .295; in 1946 '241. He'll improve in 1947, great in 1948, then chronic back problems will begin to do him in that will end his career.

Eddie_Miller_1948-49_leaf Cincinnati Red’s SS Eddie Miller is now sidelined with an arm injury and will will out for about one month. Though Miller's not much of a hitter (.235, 7, 44), he's no slutch, and he's a pretty good glove man (Av)e68.

Earlier this month, he was out of the lineup for six days with leg pain. Last season, Miller broke a kneecap. Injuries plague the defensive star throughout the 40’s, but they won’t wear him down. He’ll play full-time the next two seasons and last through 1950.

Ken_O'Dea_1940_playball  Ken O’Dea, Boston Braves catcher, suffers a fracture of his right hand when hit by a foul bunt off the bat of Pittsburgh’s Al Gionfriddo. At first it’s thought to be only a bruise, and O’Dea shrugs it off, working more games, on August 4 and 6, before X-rays reveal the break.  Though later restored to the Boston Braves roster, O’Dea is finished for the year. In fact, at 33, he’s finished in the major leagues.

Pee_Wee_Reese_1947_bond_bread Brookyln Dodgers SS Pee Wee Reese irritates an old neck injury while turning a DP against the Braves today, he’ll finish out the game, but he’ll sit out till the 15th, watching the All-Star Game from the stands. This neck injury (chipped vertebra) will affect his play all season, which in turns will affect the Dodgers in the standings.

Pete_Reiser_1948-49_leaf Brooklyn Dodgers star OF Pistol “Pete” Reiser hurts his shoulder again on a play in the OF against the Braves today and like his teammate Reese, he’ll miss the All-Star Game as well, but it’s uncertain if Reiser will miss any acrtion once play resumes on Thursday in Chicago.

Joe_Dimaggio_1947_bond_bread Joe DiMaggio suffers cartilage damage to his left knee, sliding into a base in the first game of today’s doubleheader against the A’s at Yankee Stadium. He also sprained his left ankle, too, but it doesn’t get the headlines enjoyed by his knee. He’ll miss the All-Star Game and won’t return to the field till pinch-hitting on August 2. The Yankees said they were glad they had an 8½ game cushion in the standing, with DiMaggio leaving the lineup for possibly up to 30 days or more.

His first game back is scheduled for July 16, but it’ll be in a relief role against the Browns.

Jack_Lohrke_1949_bowmanA bus carrying the Spokane Indians team of the Class B Western Intl League plunges 300 feet off a narrow road over the Snoqualmie Pass in the Cascade Mtns of Washington State. Eight players are killed, seven injured in the rainstorm (another will die, several days from now). Spared from the disaster is infielder Jack Lohrke, as he was pulled from the bus at its final stop before climbing to the Pass and told he’s to report, instead, to the San Diego Padres, to whom he’s just been promoted. “Lucky Lohrke” will be third baseman of the New York Giants in 1947, going from B ball to the major leagues in less than a year.

It’s not his first encounter with fate, he survived the Normandy Invasion and the Battle of the Bulge; he was in a train wreck that killed and injured several others; then last September, he missed a military transport flight in Jersey City that crashed in Kansas, killing all 23 passengers.

Standings in the Mexican League show Monterrey in first place. Vera Cruz, whose roster is jammed with ex-bog leaguers, is last. On the Vera Cruz Blues, are manager Mickey Owen, Max Lanier, Lou Klein, Harry Feldman, Ace Adams, Roberto Estalello, Chili Gomez (prewar Phillies and Nats) and Danny Gardella. Owen will be soon deposed as manager.

46spahn Meanwhile back in the states, a young, hardnosed southpaw named Warren Spahn, who made several appearances back in 1942 before entering the war, has impressed everyone with his (4-1, 1.29, 4 saves) so far this season. Next month while Shahn is beating the Cardinals in Boston, Browns radio announcer Dizzy Dean, reading the Western Union tickertape, on which scores come into the press boxes everywhere, will pose a question. “Who in the world,” scoffs Diz, “is Spahn?” That about sums it up, as Spahn prepares to make his starting debut soon.

June 16, 1946 News

Minor League nore: Billy Goodman, 1944 sensation with the Atlanta Crackers who hit .336 at the age of 18, rejoins the team after being discharged from the Navy. The Sporting News says he carries “a $30,000 price tag.” He won’t be really ready for the major leagues till 1948, when he hits .310 in his first full year with the Red Sox. In 1946, in 86 games for the Crackers, he’ll hit .389. Ahead of him are 16 seasons in the big leagues and a 1950 AL batting title. With so many “can’t miss” youngsters emerging from the war, Goodman is one of the relatively small group who really can’t miss.

Stan_Musial_1948-49_leafThe St. Louis Cardinals Stan Musial takes over 1B for good, playing the unfamiliar position throughout the rest of the season. Next year, Stan will be a 1B exclusively, then return to the OF, almost full time into 1950. In the 1950s, he’ll split time between 1B and the OF.

Vince_DiMaggio_1941_playballThe New York Giants sell Vince DiMaggio (.050, 0, 0) to San Francisco, land of his birth. In 15 games since coming over from the Phillies, Vince had one hit. He says New York didn’t give him a fair chance, but statistics is statistics. After a slow drive across country with his pregnant wife, loudly declaring he might just go to Mexico, DiMaggio finally agrees to terms with the Seals.

Lefty_WilkieThe Pittsburgh Pirates option pitcher Aldon “Lefty” Wilkie (0-0, 3.68) in 7 IP to Hollywood, at the end of his three seasons in the big league. He’s from Zealandia, Saskatchewan, Canada, hotbed of baseball talent. Lefty will post a 9-7 for the Stars.

Ron_Northey_1949_bowmanAgainst the Pirates today, with a teammate on base, Ron Northey of the Phillies sends a Rip Sewell blooper ball to the top of the RF wall in Shibe Park. Sewell long claims no one ever hit a homer off his special pitch, whose identifying characteristic is that  its flight from the pitching mound to home plate resembles the arc you might see in a slo-pitch softball game. Popular legend will atest that Ted Williams is the first to homer off the blooper pitch, next month in the All-Star game. But Northey did it today on June 16th.

May 31, 1946 News

Joe McCarthy, manager of the New York Yankees resigned last week after holding the job since 1931. McCarthy sites ill health, but it’s been long rumored that Joe had a considerable drinking problem. The catalyst for the change was a loud tongue-lashing McCarthy gave carousing pitcher Joe Page in front of the whole team while on an airline flight. After the trip, McCarthy went home to his farm near Buffalo, his health somewhat worse for wear, and didn’t return. He was replaced by popular catcher Bill Dickey, who says he’ll continue as the regular backstop for New York. Though Dickey coveted this managerial position, he’ll grow to hate it and will resign himself before the end of the season.

Those innovative Yankees have done it again, adding “hit” and “error” lights to the scoreboard at the Stadium.

May 19, 1946 News

It is an ominous day for the Dodgers, who are suffering already from a flurry of minor injuries. Pete Reiser bounces off the CF wall of Ebbets Field, hurries his throw to the infield and further damages his already

separated shoulder. Pitcher Ed Head pitches into 7th inning, get’s win, but suffers a severe sore arm against the Reds. Cookie Lavagetto’s arm needs rest, so Billy Herman is put at third base. Eddie Stanky, despite a bad thumb, goes to second base. Neither Reiser nor Head are out of the lineup long, but the hurts contribute to the gradual physical deterioration of each player. Lavagetto won’t return to the regular lineup for a month, till Herman is traded away.

Max Lanier wins 3rd of year, leaves for Mexican League.

Stan Musial hits 2-doubles, triple;hitting behind Stan, Enos Slaughter gets 3 Ribbies.
